A week in passing

It’s been a while since my last post. I’ve been reasonably busy, and haven’t had time to write one of these up. So, as a summary of the previous week, I’ll just go over the highlights so far.

Thursday: CCIC Nerf War
This was an extremely fun event, even if I couldn’t stay the whole time due to an internship meeting. While I had thought I’d be the worst nerfer there, it turned out that in the three games I played, I had a decent survival rate. This was aided greatly by my slightly modded BBBB, because it kept me out of the range of puny Recons and other stock guns. Reload times proved to be a big problem, however. It was hard to reload on the run, and I often didn’t have a shot loaded when I saw someone. To solve this, I will be integrating a Nitefinder into the BBBB, so I hopefully will have an emergency shot when I’m cornered.

Friday-Saturday: Northern Tier Practice
I went on a canoeing practice at Lake Del Valle with my Northern Tier crew last weekend. We worked on stroking in time and maintaining speed. Main problems with our technique were that the boat refused to go straight, at best a squiggly line across the water, and at worst a huge S-shaped curve through the lake. Total distance that we traveled was about 8-10 miles, equivalent to the amount we would travel each day at the actual Northern Tier trip. Luckily, we didn’t capsize a single time.

X-Miler 2009

For the past week, I’ve been with my Scout Troop on a 220 mile biking trip. We started the trip up north of San Francisco, then rode down to Monterey Bay. Overall, the ride was quite enjoyable. The scenery was very nice to look at, even if it was cold, and the biking wasn’t especially hard, just long.
For this trip, I happened to lead Crew 6, the last crew in the troop. This meant that I rarely exceeded 10 MPH, and averaged 5-6 MPH over the full seven days. However, on one day, I got to ride in Crew 1 for a half-hour, and hit a top speed of about 50 MPH, which was really fun.
Accident wise, we had very good luck. It might have been because Crew 6 moves too slowly to have a serious accident, but we didn’t get so much as a flat tire. The closest we got was when one of the scouts in Crew 6 (Dewey) managed to flip himself upside-down on the side of the road. Later, lifting his biking, I still don’t know how he did it. Dewey’s bike was the single smallest and heaviest bike on the whole trip.
Each day we biked a varying distance, ranging from as low as 17 miles on the sixth day to 58 miles on the 4th, we experienced all sorts of exhaustion. Of course, since this route was planned with younger scouts in mind, it was actually pretty easy (or maybe that’s just me).
I also got to meet a couple new people and talk with old friends. A lot of siblings came to X-Miler as one of their first campouts, so it was a good opportunity for socialization. In the end, I was in a little group including Brandon, Helen, Aaron, Laura, William, and I. Collectively, I think we had every single high school student except Brian Ip (because he’s weird like that). Topics of discussion ranged from biking to the new Venture Crew 453.
On that note, Brandon, Yifen, Adam, and Helen are starting a new Venture Crew for Troop 453. Anyone over the age of 14 and under the age of 21 can join, so if you like high adventure outdoors, please join! (not like any of you will…) Anyways, I’ll have the pictures later. Mr. Tung still needs to upload his 2000+ pictures off of his two DSLRs.

Homecoming

We had our first Homecoming meeting today, at Rainbow Park. Participation was decent, although (as expected) there were significantly more girls than guys.

Basic summary:

  • We’re splitting it into various committees. Examples:
    • Script
    • Choreography
    • Guys’ Dance
    • Girls’ Dance
    • Couples’ Dance
    • Decorations
    • Backdrop
  • We are going to use the Yahoogroup from now on. If you’re a member of the Class of 2012, sign up.
  • Our theme is Neverland
  • Donate supplies, especially cardboard, wood, etc.
  • Don’t do too many groups (that was like 60% of their speech… but wtv)

However, there seems to be some miscommunication between the classes. 2012 officers say that the Class of 2011′s theme is Indiana Jones, while the email sent out to the Class of 2011 states that it is in fact Mulan. I’m not sure how this could have happened… and also, can someone confirm which one 2011 is doing?

VirtualGunExperiment 1.2

Well… I’ve rethought the strategies of VGE, and have decided that the usage of RandomMovement is a problem. As such, I have completely removed it from the code.
