End World Hunger

End world hunger by switching from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 8. Not only is it for a good cause, but it’s something you should have done by now anyways. If you’ve already done it, reinstall it for good measure – you’ll be helping end World Hunger!

On a more professional note, as a web developer, it is a PAIN IN THE @$$ to code for Microsoft’s amazingly “Standards Compliant*” browser, and even Microsoft acknowledges that IE6 is a POS.

Since the previous website which created a personalized font is no longer available for free, I have found a new one. It works pretty much the same way: Go to the website, print out a template, scan the template back in, and download the new font file. You can access it here.

Note to “Charlatan”: Old posts are outdated.

The first weekend of this school year

Well, the first week of school is over, and it’s been pretty busy. There’s been a rather large homework load compared to last year, and other than the day of my previous post, I haven’t had much free time. On the plus side, the homework isn’t incredibly boring and I’m actually learning things in some of my classes (gasp).

Of course, I’ve realized today that California’s weather is about a season off. Over the summer it wasn’t all that hot, and probably closer to spring than summer. However, for the past week (and especially today), the temperature has been around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and it’s just about unbearable. Sure, I’ve had worse, but on a day where I’m stuck at home with no air conditioner (my house doesn’t have one), it’s not fun.
I do realize, however, that going outside will be worse… =(

Earlier today I spent a bit of time converting the images sent to me by IKain into the ones on the website, you can preview here. I hope that this design will be much better than the original (here). Coincidentally, I’m once more getting SSL errors on their page.

On the topic of school:

Korsunsky’s having me kill a couple of trees on my own this year, with worksheets on colored paper, lots of stuff to print (seems to be daily, I think) and plenty of calculus homework. My parents are more concerned about the ink, though.

We haven’t really done much of anything in chem, history, and lit, so I don’t have anything to say about them. Revilla (spanish) has given us a Spanish 2 HowMuchDoYouRemember© test, I’m not too sure how well I did. We’re apparently going to be starting with reviewing the preterito and the imperfecto, then going on to the subjunctive.

Don’t have anything more to say so…. yeah. Comments?

I feel so efficient…

I came home today and decided to go directly to homework and be productive. Calculus was nice and short, since I was already half done. There was only like 10 problems in section 2.3, so I was done in maybe 20-30 mins. Then came APCS homework, due Thursday… and that was done by 4:00PM as well. Including the reading that went along with it. The hardest part, actually, was finding “16 reserved terms” in “DiscMover.java”. I couldn’t find the last two, but later realized that “true” and “false” counted… that kinda failed. After that I was bored, so I worked on Martell’s History of Me brochure. I finished that as well, although I can’t print it because I burned all my black ink on Korsunsky’s 40+ worksheets that I printed yesterday. At any rate though, I got a lot done. Only thing is, I don’t have the stuff to do tomorrow, and if I slack off for a day, it’ll become a habit. What to do…? Or I could just do USACO and ACSL… which require thinking… kind of?…

First Day of School

First day of school’s over, and with it my first day as a sophomore. It’s been an interesting day, with people who are actually younger than I am (!) in school, and a bunch of new classes to deal with.

Classes:

  • First Period – Honors Chemistry
Dr. Rocklin is an awesome teacher. We got our green sheets and a free choice in seating arrangements (to be permanently decided tomorrow). Surprisingly, I saw a bunch of people in my class that I hadn’t expected. Maybe it’s just because none of these people had their schedule yet…
As a demonstration, Rocklin filled a balloon with hydrogen and set it on fire, creating a fireball lasting for less than a second – unfortunately, we don’t get to do that in class =(.
  • Second Period – World History
Mr. Martell is a cool guy. We didn’t do much in class, but we saw an interesting powerpoint called “Zoom” and answered some basic questions on it. I think I’ll like History this year…
  • Third Period – P.E. Racquet Sports
We got our planners, and found out that last year’s P.E. uniform wouldn’t cut it – we need to buy another pair of shorts, which kinda sucks. We’re getting lockers tomorrow, and dressing on Thursday.
  • Forth Period – AP Calculus BC
Korsunsky is said to be a great teacher, so I’ll have to reserve input for a while. We got our textbooks and a short lecture on why we should go back to AP Calculus AB in the 38 min. time period we were there.
  • Fifth Period – World Literature and Writing
The only class I got homework in, so it may have colored my opinions a bit. Smith seems to be a teacher that I can learn from, and I do need work in both reading and writing. We analyzed “The Road Not Taken” in class, probably the most productive thing I did today.
  • Sixth Period – AP Computer Science
A lot of friends in this class, even if few of them are sophomores. Peck did a nice demonstration on antique memory, including the $5000.00 Seagate hard drive with a capacity of (!) 5 MB. This’ll probably be the class I have the most fun in for this school year. We also set up our Schoolloop accounts and our computer login information.
  • Seventh Period – Spanish 3
The rest of my friends seem to have been in this class… and I think it’ll be much better than Spanish last year. I forgot the preterito tense today, but I’m sure I can recover it in a reasonably short amount of time.

Some other new things:

  • Lunch now costs $3.50, from $3.25 last year
  • A+Board is gone, replaced by Schoolloop. Seems to have been a decent replacement, but we’ll see.
  • You can bypass the “End User Protection” system that stops PortableApps from running by copying the app to C:\
