Portable Apps

I just got a pair of USB flash drives yesterday. Of course, seeing as I like to carry my personal preferences around, I installed a full Portable Apps suite on each one, including but not limited to:

  • Clamwin
  • Eclipse
  • Filezilla
  • Keepass
  • Firefox
  • Thunderbird
  • Notepad++
  • Openoffice.org
  • Pidgin

I don’t know if the exe-blocking “antivirus” program is still on the school computers, but if it isn’t, these programs will allow me to do a much larger varieties of functions than the school computers’ defaults allow. At the very least, they’ll be useful when I go to other places and don’t bring my laptop with me.

Modem/Router Failures…

A week ago, our modem/router combination started to work only in wireless, and not with the ethernet cable. Normally this wouldn’t be such a bad thing, but we have two computers in our house without wireless cards. As such, we decided to replace our Netgear DGN2000 with a separate modem and router.
Being Asian, my family decided to buy the cheapest ones available, which happened to be a D-Link 2320B modem and a Netgear WGT624v4 router. Unfortunately, the D-Link 2320B was a pretty bad buy. I had to hack around its shortcomings in order to connect to the internet.
The first problem: No matter how many times you configure it, it will insist on running an Autoconnect routine and creating another interface when you login. This is highly annoying, and disorienting, because it reboots after you set up the interface in the first place. All symptoms combined, one would think the modem had never been configured in the first place. It took me about a day to realize this.
After we had a working modem, the second problem came along. To all appearances, the modem was working fine, until we connected the router. Then it would steadfastly refuse to connect to the internet.
On the modem side, I changed everything I thought could possibly help… to no avail. It turns out, D-Link thinks that only one computer deserves to access the internet. I had to spoof the MAC address and IP of my laptop onto the router, then configure it so all requests pass through properly. In other words, it was a fricken’ pain. Anyways, I’ve got internet now… so that’s good.

Shipping Fails

I didn’t think that shipping companies felt like wasting money like this in our current economy, but…

[aslideshow]
Crushed, upside-down, and alone on a truck...
A truck. On another truck‽ a bigger truck‽
[/aslideshow]

This is kinda fail, don’t you think?

Summer's almost over

Summer’s coming to a close, as we approach August 24th. This summer’s been fun, with X-Miler, Northern Tier, Whitewater Rafting, and all the things in-between. The only downside I can think of, looking back, is that I didn’t get to do much with my friends, either from not being in town or from other schedule conflicts. It seems that many have relapsed into Middle-School Era entertainment, such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Maplestory, and other amusing games.

Hopefully this next year will be fun, and we’ll get to learn more, do more, and have fun. We’ll meet new people, and make new friends.

On another note, for the last two weeks that we do have, I’m quite bored. Got any ideas on what to do?
