Throughout the journey of the Hispaniola, the adventurers sail in search of a hidden treasure. And, in this most classic of adventure stories, they find it, though not without its share of trials and tribulations.
Today, we often work in search of a lucky break, trying to make the Next Big Thing™ or to Save The World™ or some other grandiose idea. We dream of a time where we can escape to our own hidden island treasure, secluded from the pressures of day-to-day life.
But how much has truly changed since Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island? Is there a Long John Silvers of the modern workplace? What of John Trelawney, lacking sense but having skill and determination? And of course, everyone is the protagonist of their own story, so there must be some part of Jim Hawkins’ character in us. Perhaps, one day, we will find what we seek — the hidden treasure that is at once the most and least important of all things.
